Healthy Aging Month

September is Healthy Aging Month, which is kind of funny. Shouldn’t every month be about aging healthfully? BUT, it’s actually a whole lot more complex than just taking your vitamins and applying your SPF. Healthy Aging Month was started to celebrate the fact that aging is a badge of honor and privilege, and our lives can always be surprisingly, delightful, and empowering. Many women pivot their career paths late in life, or make a big move. So let’s make this month about aging healthfully — mentally, physically, and everything in between.

We wanted to shine a spotlight on some of our team members, and get their takes on aging and how they’re doing it healthfully.

How did you think about aging in your twenties, as compared to now?
I did not understand the importance of slowing down in my 20s. Now, I believe slower pace, more presence, allowing every moment to be ritualistic is the key to aging gracefully and with optimal vitality.

What are some ways you healthfully age now, both physically and mentally?
Balance and moderation. Enjoying low impact movement that connects my heart, mind and body instead of pushing through and forcing things that break my body and adrenalize me. Meditation, breathwork, compassion, non-judgement, forgiveness, and always choosing love instead of needing to be right.

What is one health goal you have for the next decade?
Listen to my body and honor my unique inner guidance always and foremost. Part of that is choosing what nourishes and supports me over anything that comes from a place of trying to be perfect, self-criticism/ judgement or punishment. I want to continue to always make choices from the place of how I want to feel energetically, not the limiting of my state of mind.

If you had a health mantra for where you are in your life now, what would it be?
Trust your gut or be your own guru!

Who is someone who has aged healthfully who you admire?
Kelly Wearstler, my girl crush and boss babe inspiration of all time!

What is your absolute favorite Life-flo product to support healthy aging and why?
I love the Pure Olive Squalane Oil! It revitalizes and hydrates my skin, adding luster and glow when I am feeling depleted. It creates immediate sparkle and shine, while making me feel luxurious.

How did you think about aging in your twenties, as compared to now?
It honestly seemed like a foreign concept in my early twenties! However, in my late twenties I started to notice accumulation of sun damage and first signs of aging so I made some changes.  I stopped getting tan and started wearing sunscreen every day. I also enhanced my daily skincare routine to ensure I was properly double cleansing, exfoliating and nourishing my skin. I feel grateful now that I have been diligent about a skincare routine.

What are some ways you healthfully age now, both physically and mentally?
I take good care of myself – making sure I eat well, drink enough water, exercise and get enough sleep. These things make such a difference as I age! I have also learned to slow down and really appreciate my precious time with friends and family.

What is one health goal you have for the next decade?
To relax more and not over-schedule myself.

If you had a health mantra for where you are in your life now, what would it be?
To do the best I can but not over think it. Every day is a new day and a fresh start.

Who is someone who has aged healthfully who you admire?
My mother! She is such an inspiration to me on all levels. She is in her early 70s but is so youthful and vibrant. She is in good shape, has taken great care of her skin and has a really healthy outlook on aging.

What is your absolute favorite Life-flo product to support healthy aging and why?
I love the Pure Rosehip Seed Oil! It hydrates my skin and makes it feel so nourished. A fall/winter must-have.

How did you think about aging in your twenties, as compared to now?
In my 20s it was all about gaining expertise to prove a career. I wanted to be older, more experienced. In my 50s I’m all about innovation, appreciation, and gratitude for this beautiful planet and celebrating time with the people we love. In your 50s you know that life goes way too fast to worry about wrinkles. Having said that I wish I knew all that we know now about how to protect and nourish your skin!

What are some ways you healthfully age now, both physically and mentally?
When I rise in the morning, I smile and say thank you for today. I do sun salutations to stretch out the kinks and enliven the body temple, then spray a homemade herbal hydrosol on my face to wake up with plant love. I do a facial massage with lavender gel cream in the warmer months, and I massage with a light facial oil in the winter months. That oil is a blend I make with Life-flo’s camellia, grapeseed, and rosehip seed oils, as well as pomegranate seed and black seed oils.

Then I write a list of three things I’m grateful for. I take a probiotic every morning with a glass of water before coffee. I’m fortunate to be able to eat a Mediterranean pescatarian diet predominantly sourced from local produce and fish shopped at my weekly farmer’s market. I workout outside, and learn new things daily. Like my Grandmummy did, I try to make at least one person laugh every day.

What is one health goal you have for the next decade?
I want to remain fit, sensual, strong, and energetic so that I can hike in all of the national parks, visit big trees, and dance at music festivals.

If you had a health mantra for where you are in your life now, what would it be?
Fun-loving, always grateful, appreciative of nature, in wonder about how much there is to learn and experience, active every day: these are what keep us young.

Who is someone who has aged healthfully who you admire?
Meryl Streep and Barbara Streisand, as well as Betsy Telleson and Polly Jones (our beautiful fellow coworkers).

What is your absolute favorite Life-flo product to support healthy aging and why?
At 50, it was the Estro-Care Cream because it really works! Now I would probably say the Pure Magnesium Flakes because they create the absolute best relaxing bath after workouts or yard work.
